Terminology

Yellow-Star House

There are two issues with the commonly used terminology:

  1. In Hungarian we call it CSILLAGOS HÁZ (“house” with a star) or ZSIDÓ HÁZ (“Jew” or “Jewish” house). I believe that the current terminology of “Yellow-Star House” is derived from a need to give it a descriptive and politically correct name.

  2. In Hungarian, the word HÁZ (plural HÁZAK) refers to both a single-family house or a large multi-family residential building. In all the documents I have seen, the word HÁZAK is translated into HOUSES. I suggest that because of the type of residential structures selected, it is more appropriate to refer to Yellow-Star buildings since they were generally 4-5 stories high multi-family apartment buildings.
